Nigeria: Expect the Unexpected
Nine days across Lagos and Owerri: delays, generators, a village wedding, and why Nigeria is never boring.
Travel
My personal experience, practical advice, and survival guide.
My people, make I tell you something before you pack your bags and come to Nigeria. Nigeria is a beautiful country, full of life, culture, food, family, business opportunities, and people wey sabi hustle. But make nobody deceive you: if you want to stay comfortably in Nigeria, you must prepare yourself well.
I am talking from my own experience. I left Nigeria in 1995 and returned years later, and I discovered that some of the same problems I remembered from childhood were still there. NEPA wahala, traffic, airport delays, unreliable infrastructure, and the everyday struggle to get things done can test your patience.
But despite all these challenges, Nigeria remains home. The people are resourceful, the food is wonderful, and there is something special about being among your own people.
So, if you are planning to stay in Nigeria for a few weeks or several months, especially if you are coming from America or the United Kingdom, this guide is for you.
Prepare yourself, organize your resources, find trustworthy people, and expect the unexpected.
My people, you need a dependable cooker for your everyday cooking. No be every day you go want depend on restaurants or roadside food.
Get a good gas cooker or electric cooker, depending on the facilities available in your house. Because NEPA fit take light at any time, gas cooking can be a more dependable option during power outages.
Make sure you have enough cooking gas and that the cooker is installed safely. If you use electricity, have a backup plan for when the power goes off.
If there is one thing wey fit frustrate person for Nigeria, na NEPA.
You fit get light now, and before you know wetin happen, everywhere don go dark. Sometimes you no go even receive warning.
That is why I recommend a combination of a generator and solar power, with batteries and an appropriate inverter system.
Solar power can help you run essential appliances and lighting, while a generator can provide backup when necessary.
Make sure the system is properly installed. Never operate a generator inside the house or in an enclosed space because generator exhaust can cause fatal carbon monoxide poisoning.
My advice: Plan your electricity needs before you arrive. No wait until NEPA disappoint you before you begin to look for an alternative.
If you want to work online, communicate with family abroad, run your business, or handle important transactions, you need reliable internet.
My recommendation is to have two internet options. For example, you can use a primary home internet connection and a separate mobile hotspot from another network provider.
Why two? Because one network fit disappoint you when you need it most.
You may be attending an online meeting, speaking with a client, conducting Bible study, or trying to send an important document. If the internet goes off, your second connection can save the day.
Before choosing a provider, check the signal strength in your exact location. A network that works well in one part of Lagos may not work as well in another.
My people, please take your health seriously. No joke about this one.
Before traveling to Nigeria, speak with a qualified healthcare professional about the medicines and preventive measures you may need.
Your medical kit should include the following, as appropriate for your health needs:
Doses such as ibuprofen 800 mg and naproxen 500 mg are prescription-strength in many circumstances, so do not take them casually or combine them without medical advice. They can cause stomach bleeding, kidney problems, and other complications in some people.
Do not use antibiotics without an appropriate medical assessment, and do not assume that every fever is malaria.
In my view, prevention is better than waiting until a health problem becomes serious.
Before you travel, arrange your recommended vaccinations, malaria prevention, travel insurance, and any necessary medical consultations.
Know where the nearest suitable hospital or emergency facility is located. Find out how long it takes to reach it and identify an alternative route in case of traffic.
For serious emergencies, call local emergency services where available or get urgent assistance from the nearest appropriate facility. Do not delay treatment simply because you are trying to arrange travel abroad.
If you have a condition that may require specialist treatment, research suitable hospitals before departure and understand what your travel insurance will cover.
Remember: your health is more important than any business, family event, or appointment.
My brother, you need a Nigerian phone number.
If you want to navigate Nigeria properly, communicate with drivers, contact family members, speak with your cook, reach your personal assistant, and make arrangements with businesses, a local number will make life easier.
Get a compatible phone and a Nigerian SIM card from an authorized provider. Complete any required registration and identity verification. Make sure you have enough airtime and mobile data.
You should also keep your international number active if you need it for banking, business, or communication with people abroad.
A local Nigerian number can help you get things done without unnecessary complications.
This one is important, especially if you plan to stay for several months.
Nigerians are resourceful people. Many are hardworking, helpful, and capable of finding solutions when circumstances become difficult. If you build good relationships with trustworthy local people, they can make your stay much more comfortable.
But hear me well: do not take advantage of anybody simply because you have money or because you are coming from abroad. Treat people fairly, agree on their duties and payment, and respect their dignity.
A personal assistant can help you navigate unfamiliar places, organize appointments, communicate with service providers, and manage everyday arrangements.
For example, you may need assistance at airports, restaurants, money-exchange locations, booking offices, or other places where you are unfamiliar with the procedures. Having somebody who understands the local environment can be useful, especially when you are new to the area.
However, do not assume that everybody you meet is trustworthy. Verify references, establish clear boundaries, and protect your personal information, money, passport, and banking details.
A personal assistant should help you become more organized, not make you dependent on one person for everything.
Find the Nigerian meals you enjoy eating and arrange for a cook to prepare them regularly. If you prefer two cooked meals each day, agree on that arrangement before hiring anybody.
Discuss your menu, dietary requirements, shopping budget, food-storage arrangements, and payment.
My personal recommendation is that grocery shopping should be transparent. If you want your personal assistant to accompany the cook when buying food, establish that arrangement clearly. Keep receipts and agree on the budget so everybody understands what is expected.
And let me tell you something: Nigerian food is one of the greatest pleasures of staying in Nigeria. When you have somebody who can prepare your favorite meals properly, you will enjoy your stay much more.
Get somebody to clean and maintain the house regularly. Without consistent cleaning, a house can quickly become dusty, untidy, and uncomfortable, especially during the rainy season.
Your cleaner can help with sweeping, mopping, bathrooms, kitchen surfaces, laundry arrangements, and other agreed household duties. They can also help identify problems such as leaking pipes, damaged fittings, faulty lights, or other maintenance issues.
However, electrical repairs, generator maintenance, and other hazardous work should be handled by qualified technicians.
If NEPA fails, your household arrangements should make it clear who is authorized to switch on the generator or activate the solar system safely.
Do not come to Nigeria and treat everybody like a stranger. Build relationships with your neighbors, relatives, service providers, and community members. Be respectful and show genuine interest in the people around you.
But use wisdom. A good relationship can make your stay much easier, while trusting the wrong person without checking their background can create unnecessary problems.
In Naija, connection is useful, but wisdom is necessary.
Clean drinking water is essential. Before drinking tap water or water supplied to your property, understand where it comes from and whether it has been properly treated.
A suitable water purifier can help, but make sure it is designed to remove the contaminants that may be present in your water supply. Depending on the source, you may also need water testing, appropriate disinfection, or bottled water from a reliable supplier.
Maintain the filters according to the manufacturer's instructions. Do not assume that clear-looking water is automatically safe to drink.
Nigeria can become very hot and humid, especially when the electricity goes off. An air conditioner can make your room much more comfortable and help you sleep.
An air purifier may also be useful if you are concerned about dust, smoke, or other airborne particles. Remember that an air conditioner and an air purifier serve different purposes. One cools the room; the other filters air.
Maintain both appliances properly and plan for power interruptions. If you are staying in a place where electricity is unreliable, confirm that your backup system can support the appliances you intend to use.
If you intend to travel outside major urban areas, a suitable four-wheel-drive vehicle may be useful. Some roads can be rough, uneven, flooded, or difficult to navigate during the rainy season.
Choose a vehicle according to the roads you actually intend to travel. A four-wheel-drive vehicle is not necessary for every journey, and it does not make a vehicle immune to flooding, poor road conditions, or accidents.
You may hear people discuss bulletproof vehicles, especially when security is a concern. These vehicles are expensive and require specialized maintenance. Consider such protection only after obtaining a professional security assessment.
For many visitors, a reliable, well-maintained vehicle with a trusted driver is a more practical starting point.
Security is something you should consider before traveling. Understand the security conditions in the areas where you intend to stay, and seek reliable local advice about transportation, accommodation, and personal safety.
Firearms and other weapons are subject to legal restrictions. Bringing weapons across international borders or possessing them without the appropriate authorization can result in serious legal consequences.
For most visitors, I recommend beginning with practical security measures:
If you believe you need armed protection, consult qualified local security professionals and the relevant Nigerian authorities about the applicable laws and licensing requirements.
If you will be using a vehicle regularly, identify a reliable mechanic before an emergency occurs. You should also know where to obtain genuine or reputable replacement parts.
Vehicle maintenance is important because difficult road conditions, heat, dust, and heavy traffic can put additional demands on a car.
If you do not intend to drive yourself, consider hiring a professional driver who knows the area. A good driver can help you navigate traffic, find alternative routes, identify familiar landmarks, and avoid unnecessary confusion.
Before hiring one, check references, agree on payment, and make sure the vehicle is insured and properly maintained.
Depending on the property, you may need a water pump and storage tank to maintain a dependable supply of water. Some properties rely on boreholes, wells, water deliveries, or other sources that require pumping and storage.
Find out how water reaches the house before you arrive. Check the pump, pipes, storage tank, and water quality. Make sure the system is maintained properly.
Do not assume that every property has the same arrangement. A reliable water supply makes a major difference when you are living in Nigeria for an extended period.
If you enjoy watching international news, sports, movies, or programs from abroad, consider satellite television or another reliable television service. Choose a provider according to the channels you want and the service available at your location.
You may also use internet-based television if your internet connection and electricity supply are dependable enough. If you rely on streaming services, remember that your internet connection and data allowance may affect the quality of your viewing.
Make sure you have a dependable arrangement for cooking gas and generator fuel. If your house relies on a generator, you must understand how much fuel it consumes and how frequently it needs to be refilled.
Buy fuel from reputable suppliers and store it only in approved containers and appropriate locations. Never store petrol inside living areas, near flames, or where fumes can accumulate.
Generator installation, ventilation, and maintenance are serious safety matters. The same applies to cooking gas. Check hoses, connections, and cylinders regularly, and have problems handled by qualified technicians.
Do not compromise your safety because you want to keep the lights on.
When traveling to Nigeria, plan how you will access your money. You may need a combination of cash, bank cards, and electronic payment options.
Before departure, inform your bank about your travel plans if required, check foreign transaction fees, and confirm that your cards will work internationally.
Use reputable and authorized currency-exchange providers. Avoid handing over large sums of money to strangers or exchanging currency in places where you cannot verify the transaction.
Carry only the cash you need for the day and keep your backup funds secure. It is also useful to have a second payment method in case your primary card fails.
If you are maintaining a house in Nigeria, a pressure washer can be useful for cleaning outdoor surfaces, walkways, and other suitable areas.
You also need an effective mosquito-control plan. Mosquitoes can become particularly troublesome when the weather is hot, the surroundings are damp, or the electricity goes off and you cannot use air conditioning.
Use approved mosquito repellents, window screens, bed nets where appropriate, and measures to eliminate standing water around the property.
If you use mosquito-control oils or chemical products, follow the product label and safety instructions. Do not put insecticides into a pressure washer or spray chemicals in a manner that exposes people, pets, food, or drinking water.
A clean environment and proper mosquito prevention can make your stay much more comfortable.
If you are a Nigerian citizen and your Nigerian passport is valid, keep it secure and accessible when needed. A Nigerian passport may be useful for international travel and identification, depending on the circumstances.
If you are a Nigerian citizen living abroad, check your passport's validity well before departure and arrange renewal if necessary.
If you are not a Nigerian citizen, you will need to follow the entry and immigration requirements applicable to your nationality and circumstances.
Keep a secure copy of your passport and relevant travel documents separately from the originals.
A Nigerian bank account can make it easier to manage local expenses, depending on your eligibility and banking needs. It may be useful for transfers, bills, household payments, and other local transactions.
However, you should confirm the account-opening requirements with the bank. These may include acceptable identification, proof of address, tax information, and other documentation.
Keep your banking information private, use secure authentication, and never disclose your PIN or one-time passwords to a personal assistant, driver, or other service provider.
A local bank account is a convenience, but it should be part of a secure financial plan.
If you own or occupy a large property, you may want to consider additional security. Whether that level of security is necessary depends on the property, location, security assessment, and budget.
If you hire guards, use a reputable security provider and confirm that the personnel are properly trained and authorized to perform their duties. Establish clear responsibilities, shift arrangements, emergency procedures, and communication protocols.
If you keep guard dogs, make sure they receive proper training, veterinary care, and humane treatment. Visitors and household staff should understand how to interact with them safely.
Security should make your home safer, not create additional risks.
Before you travel, identify a reputable clinic or hospital where you can receive routine medical care. If you will be staying with relatives for several months, find out which healthcare facilities are nearby and how to reach them.
A family clinic can help with routine consultations, preventive care, common illnesses, and referrals when necessary. But do not assume that a small clinic can handle every emergency.
Identify a hospital equipped to deal with serious illness, trauma, and other emergencies. Confirm its location, likely travel time, and payment arrangements.
If you have travel insurance, understand which facilities it covers and how emergency treatment or medical evacuation would be arranged if necessary.
The best time to identify a hospital is before you need one.
From my own experience, I would recommend planning your stay according to your purpose, comfort level, health needs, accommodation, and available support.
For an ordinary family visit or holiday, you might choose to stay for several weeks or a few months. A stay of around four months may be suitable for some visitors who want enough time to reconnect with family and explore the country without becoming overwhelmed.
For a longer stay of around six months, you should plan more carefully. Consider your accommodation, health insurance, finances, work arrangements, security, and access to reliable healthcare.
Four months and six months are my personal planning suggestions, not official limits that apply to everybody.
Your permitted length of stay depends on your nationality, immigration status, passport, visa or entry authorization, and any applicable conditions. Check the current requirements with the Nigerian immigration authorities before booking your trip.
Plan your activities in a way that respects local customs, community expectations, and applicable laws.
If you are traveling as part of a ministry, coordinate with trusted local church leaders and confirm whether your immigration status permits your intended activities. Do not assume that the rules for a tourist automatically cover every form of ministry or organized religious work.
The goal should be to serve people with humility, establish meaningful relationships, and conduct your activities responsibly.
Get a personal driver and save their number for contact. Confirm that the number is still active and verify the driver's identity and arrangements before relying on the contact.
Whenever possible, use verified ride-hailing bookings or other reputable transportation services.
Share your journey details with somebody you trust, especially when traveling to an unfamiliar location.
One of the things I appreciated about returning to Nigeria was the feeling of belonging.
I did not feel as though people were looking at me simply as another Black man. I felt that I was being received as a man, a Nigerian, a family member, and an in-law. That feeling meant a lot to me.
There is something special about being around people who understand your culture, your expressions, your background, and the way you communicate.
Because I can speak the language, I can express myself more naturally and understand people without feeling that everything I say must be explained. I can joke with people, recognize familiar expressions, and communicate in a way that feels comfortable.
For me, that is one of the great benefits of returning home. You are not only visiting a country. You are reconnecting with your roots.
However, I must also speak honestly about some of the things that frustrated me.
During my airport experience, I was deeply disappointed by what appeared to be repeated requests for money from staff members while passengers were going through baggage processing and security procedures.
In my experience, people asked for money at different stages of the process. Some even followed travelers toward the bathroom and continued asking for money. I found the situation embarrassing and unacceptable.
Airport staff are supposed to provide services according to established procedures, not make travelers feel that they must pay extra money at every stage just to move forward.
If staff members are soliciting unauthorized payments, the authorities should investigate the complaints, enforce the rules, and take appropriate disciplinary action where misconduct is established. Repeated misconduct should have consequences.
It damages the reputation of the country, creates unnecessary stress for travelers, and discourages people who might otherwise want to visit or invest in Nigeria.
I believe Nigeria can do better. The country has talented people, hardworking citizens, and enormous potential. Public institutions should reflect that potential by providing professional service, maintaining order, and treating travelers with respect.
My criticism is not that every Nigerian worker behaves this way. It is that practices of this kind, when they occur, should not be tolerated.
We cannot expect people to respect our country if the institutions responsible for serving them fail to treat them fairly.
My people, Nigeria is a place where preparation can make the difference between an enjoyable stay and a very frustrating one.
Make sure you have dependable electricity arrangements, internet access, clean water, suitable accommodation, transportation, medical preparation, and trustworthy people around you.
Do not spend money unnecessarily just because you are coming from abroad. Buy what you need, plan according to your circumstances, and maintain a sensible budget.
Treat your staff fairly. Respect the people around you. Protect your health. Understand the local environment. And do not allow one bad experience to make you forget the good things Nigeria has to offer.
Nigeria has challenges, no doubt. But Nigeria also has family, culture, food, music, hospitality, business opportunities, and a spirit of resilience that continues to amaze me.
For me, the greatest blessing of returning home was the opportunity to reconnect with my people and experience that sense of belonging.
So, if you are planning your trip, prepare yourself properly.
No come to Naija without a plan. Get yourself organized, use your head, build the right relationships, and expect the unexpected.
Naija can test your patience, but with the right preparation, wisdom, and support, you can make your stay a much better experience.
Welcome to Nigeria. Enjoy your stay, take care of yourself, and remember:
Preparation na the key!
